Spruce St. Matthew Baptist Church will receive new members into the family of God through the following methods:
By baptism – The candidate makes a profession of faith in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior and acceptance of the gift of salvation.
By letter – The candidate will provide the name and address of the church where they are a member of good standing. We will correspond with the church to request the letter.
By statement – The candidate acknowledges a prior conversion experience and baptism by immersion in a church whose beliefs and practices are in accordance with our church values. This person should have been out of fellowship with any church for at least six months.
By watch-care - The candidate is a member in good standing of another church not located in Kansas City but temporarily residing in the city and in need of a worship home. This person does not have the rights of membership for voting purposes but will be allowed to participate and serve in church ministries.
When you join Spruce St. Matthew Baptist Church, you are immediately a member of God’s family. Each new member is added to the Spruce St. Matthew Baptist Church rolls as a “Conditional Member”. What this means is that you have confessed your sins and accepted Jesus as your personal savior. You have expressed the desire to be in covenant relationship with and participate in the ministries of Spruce St. Matthew Baptist Church. To become an “Active Member” with all rights and privileges, you must complete the requirements as outlined below.
New members who are under the age of 16 are immediately assigned to a Sunday School Class. Baptism and the administering of the right hand of fellowship occur during morning services on the first Sunday of each month. After being baptized and receiving the right hand of fellowship, you will be updated in the church roll as an “Active Member”.
New members who are at least 17 years old are REQUIRED to complete six orientation classes. Baptism occurs during morning services on the first Sunday of each month. You may be baptized at this time but will not receive the right hand of fellowship until you have completed the orientation classes. After receiving the right hand of fellowship, you will be updated in the church roll as an “Active Member.”
